In this world, we have crazy identity issues. We’re constantly bombarded with messages about who we are, what we’ve done, and what we will become. We let the world, the people in our lives, and pop culture determine our identity and who we are. We become slaves of their opinions, which turns us into slaves of fear. Fear of what people will really think of us if they knew the true us. Fear of people rejecting or leaving us. Fear of losing our popularity or our Facebook likes. Fear of never measuring up. Because we’ve become slaves to this fear, we’ve allowed their opinions to control everything we do and all of our actions. We let it tell us who we are. But, sister, here’s the good news. You are no longer a slave to that fear. You are no longer a slave to what people think of you. You are no longer a slave to what the world has claimed as your identity. Because you don’t belong to them. There’s a super powerful, popular worship song out right now from Bethel Music titled No Longer Slaves, and in the chorus it says, “I am no longer a slave to fear. I am a child of God.” I love that line so much, because it’s pure truth! Look at these verses… “Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God! Therefore the world does not know us, because it did not know Him.” (1 John 3:1) “The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together.” (Romans 8:16-17) “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His Name.” (John 1:12) And this is where your identity shifts. Before you accepted Jesus into your life, before you let Him change you, yes, you were a slave. You were a slave to fear. You were a slave to sin. You were a slave to people’s opinions. You were a slave to addictions. You were a slave to your past. But not anymore. That is not who you are anymore, my friend. Because Jesus has changed your identity. Praise God. Jesus has walked into your life and He has changed who you are. You are not the same person. You are His child. God is your Father. Your perfect, crazy-loving Father who adores you. This is your new identity. Child of God. You need no other identity to define you. You need no other definition from people or the world for who you are. Your identity is secure in Christ as God’s child. Nothing you do can change that. But, friend, here’s where it can be a little bit difficult. You have a new identity as God’s child. You can’t keep living in your past identity. You are no longer a slave. You can’t keep living as one. If we allow ourselves to live in our past identity while still trying to embrace our new identity in Christ, it’s not gonna work. We have to let go of the past and our old identity in order to embrace the new. And your new identity says that you don’t have to keep living in fear or in bondage. He has set you free. He has broken your chains. Because He loves you more than you know. You are His child. Live in that freedom.
